ISONIAZID

Isoniazid is an antibiotic that treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

This medication is used with other drugs to treat tuberculosis (TB). Tuberculosis is a serious infection that affects the lungs and sometimes other parts of the body.

Isoniazid is also used with other drugs to treat people with latent (resting or nongrowing) TB including those in close contact with people who have active TB, a positive tuberculin skin test, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and those with pulmonary fibrosis (scarring of the lungs with an unknown cause).

Do not use Isoniazid if you are/have:

  • Allergic to any ingredient in Isoniazid or have had severe side effects from Isoniazid, such as drug fever, chills, or arthritis
  • Severe liver damage, active liver disease, or liver damage from previous use of Isoniazid
  • you have a history of hepatitis caused by any medicine

Most common side effects may include:

  • Upset Stomach
  • Diarrhea (When Taking Solution)

Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Eye Pain
  • Changes in Vision
  • Numbness or Tingling in the Hands and Feet
  • Rash
  • Fever
  • Swollen Glands
  • Sore Throat
  • Unusual Bleeding or Bruising
  • Ongoing Pain that Begins in the Stomach but may Spread to the Back

Precautions

Before taking isoniazid, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are/ have:

  • Allergic to it; or if you have any Other Allergies.
  • Medical History Especially of:
    • Previous Severe Reaction from Isoniazid (such as Liver Disease)
    • Liver Disease
    • Alcohol Use
    • HIV Infection
    • Kidney Disease
    • Diabetes
    • Numbness/Tingling of Arms/Legs (Peripheral Neuropathy)
    • Recent Childbirth

 

Interactions

Some medicines may interact with Isoniazid, tell your health care provider all your medications including prescription and non-prescription, especially any of the following:

  • Acetaminophen, Anticoagulants (Warfarin), Carbamazepine, Hydantoins (Phenytoin), Rifampin, Theophylline, or Valproic Acid

-The risk of their side effects may be increased by Isoniazid

  • Ketoconazole because its effectiveness may be decreased by Isoniazid

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Vision Changes
  • Slow/Shallow Breathing
  • Severe Drowsiness
