INTERFERON BETA-1B

Interferon beta-1b is a drug that belongs to a class of medicines known as interferons. It is used as an immunostimulant and is given through subcutaneous injection. It is classified as a cytokine that have antiviral properties and is useful in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, the exact mechanism of which is unknown. It interacts with cell receptors to induce the expression of gene products.

Interferon beta-1b is used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis

  • Hypersensitivity to natural or recombinant interferon beta or human albumin
  • Current severe depression and/or suicidal ideation
  • Decompensated liver disease

Interferon beta-1b may have the following side effects:

  • Headache
  • Incoordination
  • Insomnia
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dyspnea
  • Urinary urgency
  • Impotence

Take extra caution in patients with the following medines:

  • Depressive disorders
  • Pre-existing heart disease
  • Myelosuppression
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • History of seizure disorder
  • Liver impairment and severe kidney failure
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Interactions

Interferon beta-1b may interact with the following medicines:

  • Theophylline derivatives, except dyphylline
  • Zidovudine
