INSECT STINGS

Insect stings are usually not serious and will often get better within a few hours or days. However, they may become infected and may even cause allergic reactions. Insect stings can also bring about infections such as malaria and Lyme disease.

Stings are made by bugs such as bees, mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, spiders, wasps, hornets, horseflies, ants, flies and other bugs. Usually stings create a mild reaction in the body. These insects often inject proteins into the skin which can create symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain and itching.

Here are the types of stinging insects:

  • Apids – honeybees and bumblebees
  • Vespids – wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets
  • Ants – fire ants

Signs and symptoms of insect stings include:

  • Red bumps
  • Itchiness
  • Swelling of the face or mouth
  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • Chest tightness, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
  • Dizziness or fainting

DIAGNOSIS

An accurate diagnosis is needed in determining whether you have allergies to stinging insects. An allergist or immunologist may be able to help you. A medical history is often obtained, followed by allergy testing.

MEDICATIONS/TREATMENT

Insect bites often improve after a few hours or days. They can even be treated at home. To treat an insect sting, do the following:

  • Remove the sting in the skin, as well as any parts of the tick
  • Wash skin with soap and water.
  • Apply a cold compress
  • Elevate the affected area to decrease swelling
  • Avoid scratching the area
  • Do not place any substances like vinegar or soda

See your doctor if symptoms persist.
