HYPER ACIDITY

Hyper acidity is a medical condition in which the stomach secretes a lot of acids. It can be caused due to various medications, stressed lifestyle and spicy foods.

Hyper acidity has various symptoms, which can include sudden stomach pain, vomiting, loss of appetite, flatulence and heartburn. Sometimes, the problem aggravates and lead to other complications such as chronic indigestion and gastric ulcers. The problem of hyper acidity affects more than 25% population of the US.

Symptoms for hyper acidity includes:

  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Flatulence
  • Heartburn
  • Respiratory problems

These symptoms can lead to other complications if not treated promptly, such as chronic indigestion and gastric ulcers.

DIAGNOSIS

Hyper acidity can be diagnosed incorrectly as hypo acidity and so it is best to consult a physician when any of the above symptoms manifest. The following procedures are the likely tests that a physician will request:

  • Burp home test
  • Stomach-acid test (also known as “gastric acid secretion test”)
  • Heidelberg gastric analysis test

 

TREATMENT

Hyper acidity may be treated by medication or diet and lifestyle changes. Medications such as antacids can temporarily give relief while proton pump inhibitors and H2 receptor blockers are the most commonly prescribed drugs to manage hyper acidity.

Below are some tips on how to control hyper acidity:

  • Practice eating small portions of food at regular intervals
  • Eat less spicy and oily foods
  • Stop smoking and drink less alcohol
  • Regularize your sleeping pattern
  • Avoid foods that are hard to digest
  • Try anti-stress programs such as yoga, meditation or breathing exercise techniques
