HYDROXYZINE

Hydroxyzine acts as an antihistamine. It reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body that may produce symptoms of itching or hives in the skin. This drug also reduces activity in the central nervous system.

This medication is used to treat itching caused by allergies. Hydroxyzine may also be used as short-term treatment to anxiety or to help you feel sleepy/relaxed before and after surgery.

Do not use Hydroxyzine if you are:

  • Allergic to any Ingredient in Hydroxyzine, or to Cetirizine or Levocetirizine
  • In Early Pregnancy

If any of these apply to you , contact your doctor or healthcare provider right away.

Common side effects of hydroxyzine are:

  • Sedation
  • Tiredness
  • Sleepiness
  • Dizziness
  • Disturbed Coordination
  • Drying and Thickening of Oral and Other Respiratory Secretions
  • Stomach Distress

Other side effects may include:

  • Confusion
  • Dry mouth
  • Nervousness
  • Irritability
  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Tremor
  • Seizure
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor if you are/have:

  • Allergic to it or if you have other allergies, especially of Cetirizine (Zyrtec) or Levoceirizine (Xyzal)
  • Certain medical conditions, like:
    • Blockage in your Digestive Tract (Stomach or Intestines)
    • Bladder Obstruction or Other Urination Problems
    • Glaucoma
    • Heart Disease, Slow Heartbeats
    • Personal or Family History of Long QT Syndrome
    • An Electrolyte Imbalance (such as High or Low Levels of Potassium in your Blood)
    • Have recently Had a Heart Attack
    • Pregnant or Breastfeeding

Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. Tell your doctor all the drugs including prescription and non-prescription, herbals, vitamins that you are taking, especially:

  • Opioid Pain or Cough Relievers (such as Codeine, Hydrocodone)
  • Alcohol
  • Drugs for Sleep or Anxiety (such as Alprazolam, Lorazepam, Zolpidem)
  • Muscle Relaxants (such as Carisoprodol, Cyclobenzaprine)
  • Other Antihistamines (such as Diphenhydramine, Promethazine)

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Severe drowsiness
  • Seizures
  • In Children, Mental/Mood Changes (such as Restlessness, Irritability) may occur before Drowsiness
