HYDROMORPHONE

Hydromorphone is an opioid (narcotic) pain medication that blocks pain signals to the brain.

This medication is used to treat moderate to severe pain. This form of hydromorphone is not for use on an as-needed basis for pain.

This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Do not take this drug:

  • If you have severe breathing problems, or a blockage in your stomach or intestines.
  • If you have a history of drug dependence or abuse.
  • Without prescription and more than prescribed. Overdose may cause serious even fatal effects.
  • If you are pregnant.
  • Along with alcohol. This drug can slow or stop your breathing.

Common side effects of this drug may include:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sweating
  • Flushing (Reddening and Warming of your Skin)
  • Euphoria (A Feel-Good Effect)
  • Dry Mouth
  • Itching

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Your doctor may have prescribed this medication because he or she judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Serious side effects may include:

  • Heart Problems such as a Very Fast or Slow Heart Rate, Faster Pulse and Chest Pain
  • Eye or Vision Changes such as Trouble Seeing or Blurry Vision
  • Stomach Problems like Constipation and Stomach Pain
  • Bowel Blockage, which Can Cause Nausea, Vomiting and Inability to Pass Gas or Stool
  • Headache
  • Tremors (Involuntary Muscle Movements)
  • Mood or Behavior Changes such as Agitation, Hallucinations and Anxiety
  • Blood Pressure Changes Like Flushing and High or Low Blood Pressure
  • Long-Lasting Tiredness
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Pain in your Abdomen
  • Tiredness
  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Extreme Drowsiness
  • Trouble Breathing or Shortness Of Breath
  • Redness and Itching at the Injection Site (Injectable Forms Only)

Precautions

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to any of its content or if you have other allergies.
  • All prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take.
  • If you are to undergo any surgery.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Your medical condition or history, especially of:
    • Paralytic Ileus (Condition in which Food Does Not Move through the Intestines)
    • Blockage in the Stomach or Intestines
    • Cystic Fibrosis (A Condition that Causes the Body to Produce Thick, Sticky Mucus that may Clog the Pancreas, Lungs, and other Parts of the Body)
    • Peritonitis (Inflammation of the Lining of the Abdomen (Stomach Area)
    • Meckel’s Diverticulum (A Bulge in the Lining of the Small Intestine that is Present at Birth)
    • Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction (Condition in which the Muscles in the Intestine do not Move Food Smoothly through the Intestine)
    • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (A Group Of Conditions that Cause Inflammation Of the Lining of the Intestine
    • Low Blood Pressure
    • Addison’s Disease (Condition in which the Adrenal Gland Produces Less Hormone than Normal)
    • Seizures
    • Enlarged Prostate (A Male Reproductive Gland)
    • Urethral Stricture (Blockage of the Tube that Allows Urine to Leave the Body)
    • Gallbladder, Pancreas, Liver, Thyroid, or Kidney Disease.

This drug may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. Avoid activities requiring alertness or clear vision such as driving until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit the use of alcohol and certain other medications that cause drowsiness.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Pentazocine
  • Nalbuphine
  • Butorphanol
  • Buprenorphine
  • Dextromethorphan (Found in many Cough Medications)
  • Ipratropium (Atrovent)
  • Medications for Glaucoma, Irritable Bowel Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Ulcers, and Urinary Problem
  • Lithium (Lithobid)
  • Medications for Migraine Headaches such as Almotriptan (Axert), Eletriptan (Relpax), Frovatriptan (Frova), Naratriptan (Amerge), Rizatriptan (Maxalt), Sumatriptan (Alsuma, Imitrex, in Treximet), and Zolmitriptan (Zomig); Mirtazapine (Remeron); Nalbuphine; Pentazocine (Talwin)
  • 5ht3 Serotonin Blockers such as Alosetron (Lotronex), Dolasetron (Anzemet), Granisetron (Kytril), Ondansetron (Zofran, Zuplenz), or Palonosetron (Aloxi)
  • Selective Serotonin-Reuptake Inhibitors such as Citalopram (Celexa), Escitalopram (Lexapro), Fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem, In Symbyax), Fluvoxamine (Luvox), Paroxetine (Brisdelle, Prozac, Pexeva), and Sertraline (Zoloft)
  • Serotonin And Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors such as Desvenlafaxine (Khedezla, Pristiq), Duloxetine (Cymbalta), Milnacipran (Savella), And Venlafaxine (Effexor)
  • Trazodone (Oleptro)
  • Tricyclic Antidepressants (‘Mood Elevators’) such as Amitriptyline, Clomipramine (Anafranil), Desipramine (Norpramin), Doxepin (Silenor), Imipramine (Tofranil), Nortriptyline (Pamelor), Protriptyline (Vivactil), and Trimipramine (Surmontil)
  • Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) Inhibitors such as Isocarboxazid (Marplan), Linezolid (Zyvox), Methylene Blue, Phenelzine (Nardil), Selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar), or Tranylcypromine (Parnate)

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Slowed or Stopped Breathing
  • Sleepiness
  • Coma (Loss of Consciousness for a Period of Time)
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Cold and Clammy Skin
  • Narrowing or Widening of the pupils (Dark Circles in the Middle of the Eyes)
  • Slowed or Stopped Heartbeat
  • Dizziness
