HYDROFLUMETHIAZIDE

Bivalirudin

Hydroflumethiazide is a drug that reduces the reabsorption of electrolytes from the renal tubules of the kidneys. It enhances the excretion of sodium and chloride ions and water. It additionally reduces the glomerular filtration rate in the kidneys.

Hydroflumethiazide is used in the treatment of edema and hypertension.

Hydroflumethiazide should not be used in people with the following medical conditions:

  • Severe liver or kidney impairment
  • Anuria
  • Addison’s disease
  • Hypercalcemia
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Hydroflumethiazide may give rise to the following side effects:

  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Hyperglycemia
  • Gout
  • Dry mouth
  • Thirst
  • Weakness
  • Muscle pain and cramps
  • Seizures
  • Hypotension
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Anorexia
  • Sialadenitis
  • Headache
  • Impotence
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Cholestatic jaundice
  • Pancreatitis
  • Blood dyscrasias
  • Glycosuria
  • Dizziness
  • Photosensitivity reactions
  • Postural hypotension
  • Paraesthesia

Precautions

Special precautions should be observed in people with the following conditions:

  • Fluid and electrolyte disturbances
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Gout
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Elderly
  • Severe heart failure
  • Kidney or liver impairment
  • Monitor blood glucose concentrations in patients taking antidiabetics

 

Interactions

Hydroflumethiazide may interact with the following medicines:

  • Digitalis glycosides
  • Drugs that prolong QT interval
  • Other antihypertensives
  • Competitive muscle relaxants
  • Pressor amines
  • Corticosteroids
  • Corticotrophin
  • β2-agonists
  • α-blockers
  • ACE inhibitors
  • NSAIDs
  • Alcohol
  • Barbiturates
  • Opioids
  • Lithium
  • Allopurinol
  • Tetracyclines
  • Carbenoxolone
  • Hypoglycemics

Symptoms of Hydroflumethiazide overdose include the following:

  • Lethargy
  • Nausea
  • Weakness and electrolyte imbalance
  • Possibly progress to coma within a few hours with minimal depression of respiratory and heart function and with no evidence of dehydration or serum electrolyte changes
  • Gastrointestinal irritation and hypermotility
  • Temporary elevation of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels
  • Serum electrolyte changes (example hypokalemia, hypochloremia, hyponatremia) may occur in kidney disease patients
