HYDROCODONE-CHLORPHENIRAMINE

Hydrocodone is a narcotic cough suppressant (antitussive). It works on a certain part of the brain to reduce the urge to cough. Chlorpheniramine (CPM) is an antihistamine that helps relieve symptoms such as watery eyes; itchy eyes, nose, throat; runny nose; and sneezing.

This combination medication is used to treat coughs and other symptoms caused by the common cold or allergies. This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Follow the doctor’s prescription. Overdose or mismanagement may cause serious side effects.

Common side effects may include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Blurred Vision
  • Dry Mouth, Nose, Throat

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen. Your doctor may have prescribed this medication because he or she judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Serious side effects may include:

  • Mental or Mood Changes (such as Depression, Agitation, Confusion, Hallucinations)
  • Stomach or Abdominal Pain
  • Difficulty Urinating
  • Fast, Slow, Irregular Heartbeat
  • Seizures
  • Severe Allergic Reaction

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these serious side effects.

Precautions

Before taking this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to any content of this drug or if you have other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are to undergo any surgery.
  • Your medical history, especially of:
    • Breathing Problems (such as Asthma, Croup, Sleep Apnea, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-COPD)
    • Brain Disorders (such as Seizures, Head Injury, Tumor)
    • Stomach/Intestinal Problems (such as Blockage, Constipation, Diarrhea Due to Infection, Paralytic Ileus)
    • Glaucoma (Narrow-Angle)
    • Difficulty Urinating (such as Due to Enlarged Prostate or Urethral Stricture)
    • Personal or Family History of Regular Use/Abuse of Drugs/Alcohol
    • Kidney Disease
    • Liver Disease
    • Gallbladder Disease
    • Underactive Thyroid (Hypothyroidism)
    • Adrenal Gland Problem (such as Addison’s Disease)
    • Disease Of The Pancreas (Pancreatitis)
    • Mental or Mood Disorders (such as Confusion, Depression, Thoughts of Suicide, Toxic Psychosis)
    • Heart Problems (such as Irregular Heartbeat)

This drug may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. Avoid activities requiring alertness or clear vision such as driving until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit the use of alcohol and certain other medications that cause drowsiness.

Older adults and children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially dizziness, drowsiness, mental or mood changes, constipation, fast heartbeat, trouble urinating, or blood pressure changes.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Anticholinergic Drugs (such as Benztropine, Belladonna Alkaloids, Scopolamine)
  • Antihistamines Applied to the Skin (such as Diphenhydramine Cream, Ointment, Spray)
  • Narcotic Antagonists (such as Naloxone, Naltrexone)
  • Certain Pain Medications (Mixed Narcotic Agonist-Antagonists such as Pentazocine, Nalbuphine, Butorphanol)
  • Tricyclic Antidepressants (such as Amitriptyline, Desipramine)
  • Opioid Pain or Cough Relievers (such as Codeine, Hydromorphone)
  • Alcohol
  • Drugs For Sleep or Anxiety (such as Alprazolam, Lorazepam, Zolpidem)
  • Muscle Relaxants (such as Carisoprodol, Cyclobenzaprine)
  • Other Antihistamines (such as Cetirizine, Diphenhydramine)
  • Azole Antifungals (such as Ketoconazole)
  • Macrolide Antibiotics (such as Erythromycin)
  • HIV Medications (such as Ritonavir)
  • Rifamycins (such as Rifabutin, Rifampin)
  • Certain Drugs Used to Treat Seizures (such as Carbamazepine, Phenytoin)
  • Medications that Contain Dexchlorpheniramine

This product may interfere with certain laboratory tests including allergy skin testing, amylase or lipase levels. Make sure laboratory personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug to avoid false results.

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Slow or Shallow Breathing
  • Severe Drowsiness or Dizziness
  • Mental or Mood Changes (such as Confusion, Agitation)
  • Cold or Clammy Skin
  • Fast, Slow or Irregular Heartbeat
  • Seizures
  • Coma
