HOMATROPINE

Description: Homatropine is a tertiary amine antimuscarinic, produces dilation and loss of accommodation in the eye.

  • Prescribed for the treatment of cough in adults and in children 6 years of age and older.

How to use

  • Always refer to your doctors instructions before taking this medication. Duration and dosage will be determined by your medical condition and its response to the medication. Make sure to take this medication in the prescribed amount and time period even after symptoms disappear. Discontinuing the medication before completion of treatment may cause incomplete treatment of condition. If Symptoms persist, consult your doctor.
  • Adults and children older than 12 years is one tablet.
    • (5 mg/1.5 mg) orally every 4 to 6 hours. The maximum dose is 30 mg/9 mg (6 tablets) in 24 hours.
  • Children 6 to 12 years of age.
    • 1/2 tablet (2.5 mg/0.75 mg) every 4 to 6 hours not to exceed 3 tablets (15 mg/4.5 mg).
  • Minor side effects (if these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor)
    • Lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, constipation, spasm of the ureter, and difficulty in urinating.
  • May impair thinking and the physical abilities required for driving or operating machinery, depress breathing, and should be used with caution in elderly, debilitated patients and in patients with serious lung disease.
  • It is habit forming, mental and physical dependence can occur with long term use.
  • May increase pressure inside the eye and which is dangerous in cases of glaucoma
  • Should only be used when there is a clear need during pregnancy. If you are planning to be pregnant or think you may be pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of use with your doctor.
  • It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Before breast-feeding, consult your physician.

  • Inform your doctor.
    • Allergy to the medication or any allergies.

 

Drug Interactions

Taking multiple drugs may affect how medications work and/or cause unwanted side effects. List down all the medications you are taking and inform your physician and pharmacist. Do not take, discontinue, or alter any dose of medications without prior approval of your physician.

  • Products that may interact with this medication include:
    • Alcohol and other sedatives with hydrocodone can lead to increased sedation and even cause confusion.
    • Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) class of antidepressants, for example, isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), selegiline (Eldepryl), and procarbazine (Matulane) or other drugs that inhibit monoamine oxidase, for example, linezolid (Zyvox). Such combinations may lead to confusion, high blood pressure, tremor, hyperactivity, coma, and death.
    • Should not be administered within 14 days of stopping an MAOI.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Storage

  • Room temperature between 15 C to 30 C (59 F to 86 F)
  • Do not expose to light and moisture
  • Do not store in the bathroom
  • Keep all medications away from pets and children
