HEPATIC HEMANGIOMA

HEPATIC HEMANGIOMA

Hepatic hemangioma, also known as liver hemangioma, is a benign liver tumor that is made up of blood-filled cavities clusters lined by endothelial cells and supplied by the hepatic artery. The vast majority of these cases are asymptomatic and are found during imaging investigations for various unrelated conditions.

The cause of hepatic hemangioma is unknown. However, professional doctors believe that these conditions are congenital and genetic. Additionally, it appears as a single irregular set of blood vessels less than 1.5 inches in diameter.

SYMPTOMS

People who have hepatic hemangioma have no visible signs or symptoms. On the other hand, some may experience one of the symptoms below:

  • Discomfort in the upper right abdomen
  • Having a full stomach after eating just a small meal
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Bloated stomach after eating

It is not clear why these symptoms happen. Nevertheless, it causes complications and needs immediate treatment.

DIAGNOSIS

The tests and procedures for hepatic hemangioma include:

  • Ultrasound. It is an imaging technique that utilizes high-frequency sound waves to make images of the liver.
  • Computerized tomography (CT) scanning. It uses X-ray images and computer processing to create cross-sectional slices of the liver.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It is one technique that produces accurate representations of the liver through a magnetic field and radio waves.
  • Angiography. It uses X-ray contrast to check the blood vessels.
  • Scintigraphy. It is a type of nuclear imaging that creates images of the liver using a radioactive tracer material.

TREATMENT

If you have minimal hepatic hemangioma and do not exhibit any symptoms, you will not require treatment. On the other hand, if the liver hemangioma is giant, the doctor will schedule follow-up exams to check the progress.

Moreover, the treatment for hepatic hemangioma depends on the size and location of hemangioma.

The doctor may suggest:

  • Surgery for the removal of the liver hemangioma
  • Methods to cease the blood flow to the hemangioma to prevent it from growing. There are two methods to stop the blood flow: hepatic artery ligation and arterial embolization.
  • Liver transplant surgery.
  • Radiation therapy.

Before undergoing any surgery or treatment for hemangioma, make sure to consult a doctor first in order to avoid further health complications.
