HEMODIALYSIS - WatsonsHealth

HEMODIALYSIS

Hemodialysis is a treatment method that serves to eliminate waste materials from the body by filtering them out from the blood. Filtering waste materials is actually done by the kidneys, but when there is kidney failure, there is a build-up of waste materials inside the body. In this case, hemodialysis is the treatment.

Hemodialysis can also maintain the balance between important minerals in the body such as sodium, potassium and calcium. It also helps control hypertension. However, this is not considered to be a cure for kidney failure.

In this method, a machine filters out waste materials, excess fluid and salt from the blood in cases of kidney failure. While on hemodialysis, a person is expected to comply with a strict treatment schedule, take medications daily and do some changes in the diet.

There are three types of access in hemodialysis. They are the following:

  • Catheter
  • Arteriovenous (AV) graft
  • Arteriovenous (AV) fistula

Symptoms of kidney failure that will make the doctor decide for hemodialysis include the following:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Swelling
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty of Breathing
  • Increased BUN and creatinine levels

DIAGNOSIS

Your doctor will usually diagnose kidney failure based on medical history, physical exam and the following tests:

  • Urine output measurements
  • Urine tests
  • Blood tests
  • Imaging tests such as ultrasound and computerized tomography
  • Kidney biopsy

MEDICATIONS/TREATMENT

Hemodialysis can be done at a dialysis center, in the hospital or at home. In the center, dialysis sessions are scheduled three times a week for 3 to 5 hours per session. The doctor may also suggest daily hemodialysis at 6 to 7 times a week and at 2 to 3 hours per session.

There are also simple hemodialysis machines that can be brought and used at home.
