HAMSTRING STRAIN

Hamstring strain is a common and painful injury among athletes. Hamstring is a group of three muscles that run along the back of your thigh that allows you to bend your leg at the knee.

One or more of hamstring muscles gets overloaded during the strain and might start to tear. Activities that involve a lot of running and jumping or sudden stopping and starting may trigger the injury.

Symptoms of hamstrings strain may include:

  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Snapping or Popping Feeling
  • Sudden and Severe Pain During Exercise
  • Pain in the Back of the Thigh and Lower Buttock when Walking, Straightening the Leg, or Bending Over

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis involves:

  • Physical Exam
  • Imaging Tests ( x-ray or MRI)

 

TREATMENT

Minor to moderate hamstring strain usually heal on its own. You just need to give them some time.

Treatments may include:

  • Home Remedy– Rest, Icing the Leg, Compressing the Leg, Elevating.
  • Oral Medications- Anti-inflammatory painkillers. Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen(Advil, Motrin) or Naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn) will help with pain and swelling.
  • Stretching and Strengthening Exercises-It might be recommended by your doctor/physical therapist.
  • Surgery- If your injury is severe.
