GYNECOLOGIC CANCERS

Gynecologic cancers refer to any cancer that begins in a woman’s reproductive organs. Cancer is always named after the location in the body where it first appears. Gynecologic malignancies start in various locations within a woman’s pelvis, the region beneath the stomach, and between the hip bones.

TYPES

The following are the five most common types of gynecologic cancers:

  • Cervical cancer originates in the cervix, the lower, thin end of the uterus.
  • Ovarian cancer starts in the ovaries, which are found on both sides of the uterus. Some ovarian tumors originate in the fallopian tubes or peritoneum.
  • Uterine cancer develops in the pear-shaped uterus, where a pregnant woman’s baby grows.
  • Vaginal cancer originates in the hollow, tube-like passage between the uterus and the body.
  • Vulvar cancer develops in the vulva, which is the outermost region of the female genital organs.

SYMPTOMS

Pay attention to your body and understand what is typical for you to identify the warning signs or symptoms of gynecologic cancers. Signs and symptoms differ from person to person, and each gynecologic malignancy has unique symptoms.

Gynecologic cancer symptoms include the following:

  • Vaginal discharge or abnormal bleeding
  • Too full or trouble eating, bloating, and stomach or back pain
  • Pelvic discomfort or pressure
  • Frequent or urgent urination, constipation
  • Itching, burning, soreness, sensitivity, and changes in vulva color or skin

DIAGNOSIS

The tests and instruments used to diagnose gynecologic cancer vary depending on the suspected cancer’s form and location, as well as the patient’s medical history and overall condition. A thorough diagnosis enables physicians to develop the optimal treatment strategy for each patient.

The professionals utilize the most sophisticated diagnostic instruments available, including:

  • Endoscopy
  • Imaging studies
  • Molecular tissue testing
  • Tissue biopsies and body-fluid samples
  • Transvaginal ultrasound
