GINSENG

Ginseng is one of the most popular herbal medicines in the world. Asia and North America have been used different varieties of ginseng root as treatments.

Ginseng has also been studied as a way to improve mood and boost endurance. It have been said to treat cancer, heart disease, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, hepatitis C, high blood pressure, menopausal symptoms, and other conditions. While some of these uses are promising, the evidence isn’t conclusive.

Several studies in people have also shown that ginseng may lower blood sugar levels.

Ginseng is not recommended for children or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding not until enough data are gathered about its safety.

Side effects from ginseng are generally mild. This includes: nervousness and insomnia, headaches, dizziness, stomach upset, and other symptoms. Women who use ginseng regularly may experience menstrual changes. There have also been some reports of allergic reactions to ginseng.

Precautions

Before using ginseng, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have a fever, a history of high or low blood pressure, estrogen-dependent cancer, diabetes, or heart problems
  • if you are taking “water pills” (diuretics such as bumetanide or furosemide)

 

Interactions

Ginseng may affect blood sugar levels. People taking drugs for diabetes should not use ginseng without consulting their doctor first. Ginseng can interact with warfarin and with some medicines for depression. Caffeine may amplify ginseng’s stimulant effects.
