GESTRINONE

Gestrinone is a drug that is also known as ethylnorgestrienone. It is a synthetic steroid that belongs to a class of compounds known as 19-nortestosterones. It has androgenic, anti-estrogenic and anti-progesterone properties. It is taken as a tablet through the mouth.

Gestrinone is a drug that is used in the treatment of endometriosis in women.

Gestrinone should not be given to those with the following conditions

  • Metabolic disorders
  • Vascular disorders
  • Thromboembolic disorders
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease
  • Undiagnosed genital bleeding
  • Androgen-dependent tumors
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Gestrinone may give rise to the following side effects:

  • Menstrual disturbances
  • Acne
  • Oily skin
  • Fluid retention
  • Weight gain
  • Hirsutism
  • Voice change
  • Headache
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Altered libido
  • Hot flushes
  • Breast size reduction
  • Nervousness
  • Change in appetite
  • Muscle cramp
  • Depression
  • Arthralgia or joint pain
  • Benign intracranial hypertension

Precautions

Take extra caution if you have the following medical conditions:

  • Fluid retention
  • History of thrombosis
  • Children and adolescents
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Polycythemia

 

Interactions

Gestrinone may interact with the following medicines:

  • Antiepileptic drugs
  • Rifampicin
  • Oral contraceptives
