GESTODENE + ETHINYLESTRADIOL

Ethinylestradiol and Gestodene are synthetic forms of the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. Ethinylestradiol is a synthetic form of estrogen, while gestodene is a third class synthetic form of progesterone. This combination drug is utilized to prevent pregnancy. It works primarily by counteracting the arrival of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. In short, this drug is a kind of contraceptive.

This drug is commonly used in birth control, family planning, endometriosis, heavy bleeding, iron deficiency anemia, and major depressive disorder.

If gestodene/ethinyloestradiol tablets are taken properly, pregnancy cannot happen. The metabolic effects of the drug are the same as those other combined oral contraceptives.

Gestodene + Ethinylestradiol is used in the following conditions:

    • Oral contraception

Do not use this drug in people with the following conditions:

  • Severe hepatic impairment
  • Jaundice or persistent itching during a previous pregnancy
  • Dubin-Johnson syndrome
  • Rotor syndrome
  • Existing liver tumors
  • Sickle-cell anemia
  • Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • History of herpes gestationis
  • Exisiting or history of mammary or endometrial carcinoma
  • Pregnancy

Some people who take this drug may complain about the following side effects:

  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Mood swings
  • Breast tenderness

Before taking this drug to tell your doctor about:

  • Heart disease
  • Depression
  • History of seizure
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Liver or kidney problem
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
  • Obese (BMI >30 kg/m2
  • Have hypertension or dyslipoproteinaemia
  • Valvular heart disease or atrial fibrillation
  • Heavy smokers >35 yr of age
  • Lactation
