GASTRIC BANDING SURGERY

GASTRIC BANDING SURGERY

Gastric Banding Surgery involves an inflatable band positioned over the upper portion of the stomach, separating it into two unequal sections. The upper portion serves as the new intestine, reducing the consumption of calories and encouraging weight loss.

Via four to five minor incisions, adjustable gastric banding surgery is performed. The top portion of the stomach is wrapped around by an inflatable silicone band. The band is then attached to a plastic tank or “port” that can be filled with fluid. The port is positioned on the abdominal wall under the skin for easier access.

The band’s inflation is achieved by injecting small quantities of saline through the skin into the outlet or port. Several weeks after its surgical positioning, inflation starts. The doctor conducts subsequent band changes during the weeks and months that follow before you achieve a comfortable equilibrium between dietary limits and weight loss.

SYMPTOMS

As a result of gastric banding surgery, some patients appear to have a few complications. The chance of death is less than one in 3,000 due to gastric banding surgery. After surgery for gastric banding, the most serious complications include:

  • Minor complications from surgery – This involves complications such as wound infections, or mild bleeding, and they happen less than 10% of the time.
  • Dizziness and vomiting – These can also be decreased by changing the band’s tightness.

Gastric banding does not interfere with food digestion, unlike gastric bypass surgery. Vitamin deficiency after gastric banding is rare for this reason.

Usually, patients who have laparoscopic banding lose about 1-2 pounds a week. Data indicates that patients will lose as much as 50% of their extra body weight and sustain their long-term weight loss. Very little weight will be shed for a few patients. Patients that agree with their aftercare, though, may have outstanding outcomes that correlate favorably with other forms of surgery for weight loss at just a fraction of the risk.

TREATMENT

The primary advantage of laparoscopic banding is safety, with only a 0.2 percent mortality rate and a 3-5 percent complication rate.

  • Less invasive bariatric surgical procedure
  • In all types of bariatric surgery, this surgery features the lowest mortality rate.
  • Generally best weight loss control in cooperative patients
  • Lower risk of any nutritional deficiency
  • Adjustable and reversible
  • No requirements of incision or rerouting of the intestines
