FLUTICASONE FUROATE

Fluticasone is a drug that belongs to a class of medicines known as corticoteroids. It utilises a fluorocarbothioate ester linkage at the 17 carbon position. It has potent vasoconstrictive and anti-inflammatory activities, but has weak hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) inhibitory effects when applied to the skin.

Fluticasone Furoate is used to treat the following conditions:

Do not give Fluticasone Furoate to people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Skin abrasion
  • Surgery

Fluticasone Furoate may have the following side effects:

  • Eosinophilic conditions
  • Adrenal insufficiency
  • Growth retardation
  • Cushing’s syndrome
  • Decreased bone density
  • Cataract
  • Glaucoma
  • Psychological effects
  • Paradoxical bronchospasm

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Patient withactive or latent TB
  • Fungal, bacterial or systemic viral infection
  • Cataracts and/or glaucoma
  • Untreated localised infection of the nasal mucosa
  • Patient withuntreated cutaneous infection
  • Rosacea
  • Acne vulgaris
  • Perioral dermatitis
  • Perianal/genital pruritus
  • Moderate to severe hepatic impairment
  • Children
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

 

Interactions

Fluticasone Furoate may interact with the following medicines:

  • Potent CYP3A4 inhibitorssuch as ritonavir

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Suppression of adrenal function (inhalation)
  • Hypercortisolism (topical)
