ETORICOXIB

Etoricoxib is a drug that is considered a non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is utilized for +the relief of moderate pain and swelling of joints related to joint inflammation.

It works by hindering the activity of a catalyst in the body called cyclo-oxygenase (COX). COX is engaged with making substances in the body known as prostaglandins, in tissue damage and in conditions like joint pain.

Etoricoxib is used in the following:

  • Acute and chronic treatment of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Acute gouty arthritis
  • Primary dysmenorrhea
  • Relief of acute pain
  • Moderate to severe acute post-op pain associated with dental surgery and abdominal gynecological surgery

Do not give etoricoxib to people with the following conditions:

  • Active peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Previous history of broncho spasm
  • Acute rhinitis
  • Nasal polyps
  • Angio neurotic edema
  • Urticaria or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or NSAIDs including COX-2 inhibitors
  • Severe hepatic dysfunction
  • Kidney problems
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Established ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial and/or cerebrovascular disease.
  • Inadequately controlled hypertension
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation
  • Children
  • Adolescents less than 16 years old

Etoricoxib may have the following side effects:

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Patients with allergy to NSAIDs and those with asthma
  • Ischemic heart disease and those with risk factors for heart disease
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperlipidemia
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Peripheral arterial disease

Interactions

Etoricoxib may interact with the following medicines:

  • Warfarin
  • Rifampin
  • Methotrexate
  • ACE inhibitors and Amgiotensin blockers
  • Lithium
  • Aspirin
  • Oral contraceptive pills
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Diuretics
  • NSAIDs
