ETACRYNIC ACID

Etacrynic acid is a drug that is also known as a loop diuretic. It acts by binding with sulfhydryl groups of kidney cellular proteins and inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the kidney tubules, thus increasing the excretion of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride ions, as well as water.

Uses

Etacrynic acid is used to treat edema and pulmonary edema.

Anuria
History of severe watery diarrhea
Infants

Etacrynic acid may have the following side effects:

Fluid/electrolyte loss like hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypochloremia alkalosis, and hypomagnesaemia
Nephrotoxicity
Ototoxicity
Weight loss
Orthostatic hypotension
Paresthesia
Dizziness
Anorexia
Jaundice
Metabolic alkalosis
Tinnitus

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medicines:

Patient with advanced liver cirrhosis
Electrolyte imbalance
Hepatic encephalopathy
Severe myocardial disease and those undergoing surgery
Kidney impairment
Children
Pregnancy
Lactation

Interactions

Etacrynic acid may interact with the following medicines:

Aminoglycoside antibiotics
Cephalosporins
Gastric irritants
Corticosteroids
Anticoagulants
Antihypertensive agents
Lithium
NSAIDs
Insulin or other antidiabetic agents
Acetazolamide, dichlorphenamide, and methazolamide

Overdose & Brands

Symptoms of overdose include excessive diuresis with electrolyte depletion such as hypokalemia, hypochloremia, hyponatremia and dehydration. Seek medical help immediately.
