GENERIC NAME(S): EPROSARTAN MESYLATE

 

Description: Eprosartan blocks angiotensin II thereby relaxing the blood vessels and lower the blood pressure.

Indications:

Eprosartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

This medication is also used to treat congestive heart failure and to help protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes.

Contraindication:

Should not be given to patients who had allergic reactions to this drug.

Should not be given to patients already taking aliskiren.

How to use eprosartan

Dosage: For hypertension: Initially, 600 mg once daily of eprosartan.  For maintenance, a total of 400 to 800 mg administered once or twice daily.

  • Take this medication by mouth, usually once or twice daily or as directed by your doctor.
  • You may take this drug with or without food.
  • Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it.

Availability: This is a prescription only drug.

Fetal toxicity: Use of drugs that act on the renin-angiotensin system during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy reduces fetal renal function and increases fetal and neonatal morbidity and death.

Hypotension in salt-depleted patients: In patients with an activated renin-angiotensin system, such as volume- and/or salt-depleted patients (e.g., those being treated with diuretics), symptomatic hypotension may occur.

You should check with your doctor immediately if any of these side effects occur when taking eprosartan:

  • Burning or painful urination changes in urinary frequency
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
  • Swollen face, lips, limbs, or tongue

These side effects does not require medical attention, but when these become bothersome, consult your doctor:

  • Abdominal or stomach pain
  • Joint pain
  • Unusual tenderness

Precautions

General:

This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcoholic beverages.

To minimize dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a seated or lying position.

This medication may increase your potassium levels. Before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication.

  • Allergy: Before taking eprosartan, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to ACE inhibitors (e.g., captopril, lisinopril); or if you have any other allergies.
  • Medical History: Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you had: liver disease, high blood levels of potassium, severe loss of body water and minerals such as sodium (dehydration).

Pregnancy Risk: Category D. This drug can cause serious (possibly fatal) harm to an unborn baby if used during pregnancy. Therefore, it is important to prevent pregnancy while taking this medication.

Breastfeeding: Because many drugs are excreted in human milk and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from eprosartan, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.

 

Interactions

  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: aliskiren, lithium, drugs that may increase th level of potassium in the blood (such as ACE inhibitors including benazepril/lisinopril, birth control pills containing drospirenone).
  • Check the labels on all your medicines (such as cough-and-cold products, diet aids, or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen) because they may contain ingredients that could increase your blood pressure or worsen your heart failure. Ask your pharmacist for more details.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • unusually fast or slow heartbeat,
  • severe dizziness,
  • fainting

Notes

Do not share this medication with others.

Lifestyle changes such as stress reduction programs, exercise and dietary changes may increase the effectiveness of this medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about lifestyle changes that might benefit you.

Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., kidney function, potassium blood level) should be performed from time to time to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for more details about how to safely discard your product.
