EPIMESTROL

Epimestrol is a drug belonging to a class of medicines known as estrogens. Estrogens are hormones that act on estrogen receptors in the body especially in the female reproductive system. Epimestrol is a synthetic type of estrogen.

Epimestrol is used to treat infertility in females which may be due to lack of ovulation or lack of menstruation or irregular menstrual cycles.

Epimestrol should not be given to women with the following conditions:

  • Severe liver disease
  • Breast cancer
  • Thromboembolic disorders
  • Heart disease
  • Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
  • Estrogen-dependent cancers
  • Allergy or hypersensitivity to estrogens
  • Pregnancy

Epimestrol can give rise to the following side effects:

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Vomiting, nausea
  • Tender breasts
  • Weight gain
  • Fluid retention or swelling
  • Headache
  • Depression
  • Breast enlargement in males
  • Impotence in males

Increased risk of endometrial and breast cancer in menopausal women

Precautions

Take precautions when using the drug in people with the following conditions:

  • Asthma
  • Epilepsy
  • Migraine
  • Heart or kidney dysfunction
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke or cerebrovascular disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Increased blood calcium levels
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Porphyria or bleeding disorders
  • Children
  • Breastfeeding

 

Interactions

Epimestrol can interact with the following drugs:

  • Rifampicin
  • Barbiturates
  • Anticoagulants
