ENOXAPARIN

Enoxaparin is a blood thinner as it slows down the clotting of blood. It is a prescription drug and used in treating hospitalized patients who are about to undergo surgery, who are in bed rest or who have complications from heart attacks or chest pain.

It is classified under the low molecular weight heparins group. It can only delay the formation of blod clots and not break them down.

Enoxaparin is available as subcutaneous or intravenous injection.

Enoxaparin is used in the following:

  • Prevent blood clots in patients who are on bed rest
  • Prevent blood clots in patients who are about to have surgery
  • Prevent complications of chest pain (angina) and heart attack
  • Prevent blood clots in the legs with or without a blockage of a lung artery (pulmonary embolism)

Do not give this drug to people with the following conditions:

  • Brain operation
  • Spinal tap
  • Operation on the spine
  • Eye surgery
  • Retinal changes of eye in a patient with diabetes
  • Increased risk of bleeding
  • Decreased blood platelets
  • Artificial heart valve surgery
  • Severe uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Bacterial infection of heart valve
  • Stroke caused by bleeding in the brain
  • Bleeding of the stomach or intestines
  • Severe renal impairment
  • Allergies to heparin analogues, galactose-alpha-1, 3-galactose (alpha-gal), pork/porcine containing products
