EMPAGLIFLOZIN

This drug belongs to a class of drugs called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2). Empagliflozin works in your kidneys to remove sugar from your blood and moves the sugar into your urine.

Along with diet and exercise, this drug helps to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Empagliflozin can cause some people to lose body water and salt (dehydration). Symptoms of dehydration include dizziness, feeling faint, lightheadedness, or weakness, especially when you stand up. Contact your doctor if you notice these symptoms.

The most common side effects that occur include:

  • urinary tract infection. Symptoms may include:
  • a burning sensation when you urinate
  • cloudy urine
  • pain in your pelvis or back

Precautions

Do NOT use empagliflozin if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in empagliflozin
  • you have type 1 diabetes
  • you have high blood or urine ketone levels (diabetic ketoacidosis)
  • you have severe kidney problems or are on dialysis

Some medical conditions may interact with empagliflozin, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have kidney problems, low or high blood pressure, or high cholesterol
  • if you have a history of urinary tract infections, problems with urinating, yeast infections of the penis or vagina, or if you are a man who has not been circumcised
  • if you are dehydrated or have low blood volume, or if you are on a low salt (sodium) diet

Interactions

Empagliflozin can interact with other medications, herbs, or vitamins you might be taking. That’s why your doctor should manage all of your medications carefully. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you want to know more about this interactions.

If you take too much, your blood sugar levels may become too low.
