This drug is a combination of elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, and tenofovir, used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection to adults and children with no experience in any HIV treatment. It can be useful as a current medication in certain people that is in current HIV medications. This combination drug is included in the class of medications called antivirals. Elvitegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir help decrease HIV load in the blood, while cobicistat helps keep elvitegravir in the body longer for the treatment to be more effective. Though this drug combination can help ease HIV, it can’t completely treat the infection; however, this drug may lessen the risk of having acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and HIV-related illnesses such as cancers or serious infections. Practicing safe sex and making other lifestyle changes while taking this drug may also decrease the risk of transmitting HIV to other people.
You can take this drug combination with food once a day in a tablet form (around the same time every day).
