EISENMENGER COMPLEX

Eisenmenger complex is a chronic complication of irreparable heart disease (congenital) that somebody was born with.

The congenital heart defects (CHDs) related to the Eisenmenger complex can result in blood abnormally circulating in your lungs and heart. When the blood does not circulate in a normal way, the blood veins in the lungs will become narrow and rigid, raising the pressure in the arteries of your lungs.

This constantly harms the blood vessels in the lungs. With early diagnosis and intervention of congenital heart defects, this fatal condition can often be evaded. If the Eisenmenger complex does arise, it needs mindful and cautious medical observation.

SYMPTOMS

The most common symptoms of Eisenmenger complex include:

  • Headaches
  • Coughing blood
  • Grayish or bluish skin color
  • Tingling or numbness in fingers and toes
  • Tiredness over an activity
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rounded, large fingernails or toenails
  • Racing heartbeats

If you have any symptoms of the conditions, go to your doctor. Even though you have not been diagnosed with a heart problem before, signs like shortness of breath and cyanosis are indications that you have underlying medical issues that require attention.

DIAGNOSIS

In diagnosing the Eisenmenger complex, your doctor will ask about your medical history, symptoms and execute a physical exam. Then, to confirm the diagnosis, he/she will request the following tests:

  • (ECG) Electrocardiogram
  • Blood tests
  • Echocardiogram
  • Chest X-ray
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Walking test
  • CT Scan
  • MRI

These tests will help diagnose the cause of your symptoms.

TREATMENT

Usually, the treatment for Eisenmenger complex will help control symptoms and manage the condition. Even though there’s no specific remedy, medications can make you feel better, improve your way of life, and prevent serious complications.

Furthermore, most doctors don’t suggest surgery to fix the problem in your heart, especially if the condition has developed. The reason for this is that surgery can be fatal. But if other treatments don’t help, surgery or transplant will be needed.

Additionally, the medications used to treat the Eisenmenger complex include:

  • Iron supplements
  • Medications to manage irregular heartbeat
  • Blood-thinning medications or aspirin
  • Drug that calms blood vessel walls
  • Antibiotics
