ECTOPIA CORDIS

Ectopia Cordis is a very uncommon disease in which infants’ hearts are partly or entirely outside of their bodies when they are born. There are possibilities that congenital disability may occur in the belly or heart portion. Doctors and experts have not yet determined the leading cause of this condition. However, some of them have their conclusions about the situation. One of those conclusions is that bodily changes occur in the infant as it grows throughout pregnancy, limiting its natural development.

SYMPTOMS

The primary sign of Ectopia Cordis is that the heart grows outside the body. Babies with this issue often have additional midline difficulties along the line that runs from the head to the groin, including:

  • Some body parts are not properly developed
  • Scoliosis
  • Cranial cleft
  • A hole in the diaphragm
  • Cleft lip/palate

DIAGNOSIS

You may find out whether your baby has ectopia cordis during a routine ultrasound as early as the first trimester or the beginning of the second trimester. Moreover, you may need another session of ultrasound to confirm the presence of the condition in your baby. These findings are crucial in determining how to continue.

Suppose you choose to keep the pregnancy going even though having an ectopia cordis series of tests will be introduced to you. In that case, your doctor will use a combination of MRI and echocardiogram, which are procedures that produce images of the heart with the help of sound waves.

TREATMENT

This condition is challenging for both the mother and the child. If you are going to continue the pregnancy despite knowing your child’s real status or condition, physicians will recommend some treatment for a safe birth. The treatment may include the following:

C-section. The other option to save the life of your child is through a c-section. For the baby to continue his life, they will also need a little help in breathing.

Flexible plastic tube. After the c-section, the doctors will insert this flexible plastic tube to let the airflow.

Surgeries. If numerous procedures and steps are done, surgeries may be suggested by your doctors. They may conduct surgeries to repair your child’s cardiac defects.
