EATON-LAMBERT SYNDROME

Eaton-lambert syndrome is a disease wherein the immune system targets the neuromuscular junctions, which connect the muscles and nerves. Your nerve cells normally send messages to the cells of the muscle. This syndrome disrupts the communication between your nerves and muscles, it’s hard to move the muscles regularly.

SYMPTOMS

Eaton-lambert syndrome can cause the following symptoms:

  • Muscle weakness, which is frequently momentarily alleviated after exertion or exercise
  • Tingling in the feet or hands
  • Difficulty walking
  • Drooping of the eyelids
  • Fatigue
  • Dry mouth
  • Speech and swallowing difficulties
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Changes in the bladder and bowels
  • Erectile dysfunction

DIAGNOSIS

In diagnosing Eaton-lambert syndrome, your physician will go over the symptoms and do a physical exam. This disease may be detected with a specific blood test. Aside from that, you may also be subjected to electromyography testing— for the physicians to examine the muscle functioning.

The doctor may also conduct a CT scan or X-rays of the lungs since this syndrome is linked to lung cancer. Moreover, since Myasthenia gravis is a disease with symptoms that are quite identical to Eaton-lambert syndrome, the electromyography and other testing findings will be used by your healthcare practitioner to distinguish the differences between the two diseases.

If the doctor discovers that you have this disease, you’ll be tested for lung cancer, as well as other malignancies, including lymphoma. If cancer isn’t discovered right away, you may need to have monthly check-ups to keep an eye out for an undetected malignancy, as Eaton-lambert syndrome can present up to three years before a cancer diagnosis.

TREATMENT

If you have cancer, the doctor may recommend surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy to cure it. Eaton-lambert syndrome is more likely to improve if it reacts well to therapy. The doctor may also recommend medications for your immune system or aid in the improvement of muscle and nerve cell messages.

A procedure known as plasmapheresis may also be used. This entails replenishing the blood’s plasma. This clears the blood’s dangerous immune system proteins, which are contributing to the disease.
