DOXYLAMINE-DM-ACETAMINOPHEN

Doxyylamine is an antihistamine that helps relieve symptoms such as watery eyes; itchy eyes, nose, throat; runny nose; and sneezing. Dextromethorphan (DM) is a cough suppressant that reduces the urge to cough by affecting certain part of the brain. Acetaminophen is used to relieve pain and reduce fever.

These combination medications can treat symptoms caused by the common cold, flu, allergies or other breathing problems, temporarily. This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Do not use this drug:

  • To children under 6 years or 12 years unless specifically directed by the doctor.
  • Together with other drugs that have the same content, especially Acetaminophen. Too much intake of this drug may result to fatal liver disease.
  • If you are an alcohol dependent. Drinking alcohol and taking this drug may result to serious complications, especially of the liver.

Common side effects of this drug may include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred Vision
  • Upset Stomach
  • Nausea
  • Nervousness
  • Constipation
  • Dry Mouth, Nose, Throat

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Unlikely but serious side effects may include:

  • Mental or Mood Changes such as Confusion and Hallucinations
  • Shaking
  • Trouble Urinating

Rare but serious side effects may occur, including:

  • Fast, Slow, Irregular Heartbeat
  • Seizure
  • Severe Allergic Reaction

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these serious side effects.

Precautions

Before taking this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to any of its ingredients or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are to undergo any surgery.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you have any of the following health problems:
    • Breathing Problems such as Asthma and Emphysema
    • Diabetes
    • Glaucoma
    • Heart Problems
    • High Blood Pressure
    • Kidney Problems
    • Liver Disease
    • Seizures
    • Stomach or Intestinal Problems such as Blockage, Constipation and Ulcers
    • Overactive Thyroid (Hyperthyroidism)
    • Urination Problems

This drug may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. Avoid activities requiring alertness or clear vision such as driving until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit the use of alcohol and certain other medications that cause drowsiness.

Older adults and children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially dizziness, drowsiness, mental or mood changes, constipation, fast heartbeat, trouble urinating, or blood pressure changes.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • MAO Inhibitors such as Isocarboxazid, Methylene Blue, Moclobemide, Phenelzine, Procarbazine, Rasagiline, Selegiline, or Tranylcypromine
  • Antihistamines Applied to the Skin such as Diphenhydramine Cream, Ointment and Spray
  • Ketoconazole
  • Opioid Pain or Cough Relievers such as Codeine and Hydrocodone
  • Alcohol
  • Drugs for Sleep or Anxiety such as Alprazolam, Lorazepam, Zolpidem
  • Muscle Relaxants such as Carisoprodol and Cyclobenzaprine
  • Other Antihistamines such as Cetirizine and Diphenhydramine
  • Other drugs that contain the same ingredient. This may increase side effects.

This medication may interfere with certain laboratory tests that may cause false result. This includes urine 5-HIAA. Notify your doctor or laboratory personnel that you use this drug.

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Sweating
  • Stomach or Abdominal Pain
  • Extreme Tiredness
  • Agitation
  • Confusion
  • Flushing
  • Hallucinations
  • Yellowing Eyes or Skin
  • Dark Urine
  • Seizures

In children, excitement may occur first before loss of coordination, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, seizures.
