DIHYDROERGOTAMINE

Dihydroergotamine is an ergot alkaloid which is used to treat migraines. It’s a derivative of ergotamine. This drug is administered as a nasal spray or injection and has an efficacy just like that of sumatriptan. Nausea is a long-established side effect.

Dihydroergotamine belongs to a group of drugs known as ergot alkaloids. It works through narrowing the blood vessels around the brain and impacts blood flow patterns which are related to particular types of headaches. Dihydroergotamine injection is used to deal with a migraine or cluster headache attack

Dihydroergotamine-related vasospastic phenomena may also lead to muscle pains, numbness, coldness, pallor, and cyanosis of the digits. In sufferers with compromised circulation, chronic vasospasm could lead to gangrene or dying.

This drug may lead too side effects such as:

• Pain, soreness, burning, tingling, or dryness in your nose or throat

• Runny or stuffy nose, nosebleeds

• Changes in your sense of taste

• Headache, dizziness, drowsiness

• Feeling anxious or depressed

• Cold sweats

• Nausea, vomiting

Do not use this medication in case you are allergic to dihydroergotamine or different ergot medicines such as Ergomar, Cafergot, Migergot, Migranal, or Methergine. Don’t use dihydroergotamine injection if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or when you have:

  • A history of heart disease, angina (chest pain), blood circulation problems, or history of a heart attack or stroke
  • Coronary artery disease or “hardening of the arteries”
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Severe liver or kidney disease
  • A serious infection called sepsis
  • If you have recently had heart or blood vessel surgery (such as bypass surgery)

Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, numbness, tingling, pain, cyanosis of the extremities, abdominal pain, respiratory depression, increase and/or decrease in BP, confusion, delirium, convulsions, and coma.

Management of overdose is to apply warmth to affected area. Provide nursing care to prevent tissue damage. Administration of vasodilators may be beneficial.
