DIDANOSINE

Didanosine is a drug that inhibits the enzyme HIV nucleoside reverse transcriptase, thus blocking viral DNA synthesis and suppressing HIV replication.

Warnings

Hypersensitivity to didanosine
Kidney impairment
Lactation
Concomitant use w/ allopurinol
Ribavirin
Tenofovir
Stavudine
Hydroxyurea

Side Effects

Didanosine may have the following side effects:

Peripheral neuropathy
Immune reconstitution syndrome
Fat redistribution example central obesity
Peripheral and facial wasting
Breast enlargement
Buffalo hump
Optic neuritis
Headache
Anxiety
Increased risk of heart attacks
Diarrhoea
Rarely, noncirrhotic portal HTN, hepatic failure

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medicines:

Patient with history and risk of pancreatitis
History of neuropathy
Hepatomegaly
Hepatic example chronic active hepatitis and renal impairment
Children
Pregnancy

Overdose & Brands

Signs of overdose include the following:

Pancreatitis
Peripheral neuropathy
Diarrhoea
Hyperuricaemia
Hepatic dysfunction
