Diabetes: Early Signs and Symptoms

Diabetes is a disease that develops when your blood glucose (blood sugar) is too high. Blood glucose is your body’s main source of energy, and comes from the food you eat. Insulin, a hormone produced by your pancreas, helps glucose enter your cells where it is used for energy.

There are three main types of diabetes: In type 1 diabetes mellitus, the pancreas doesn’t make enough or any insulin at all. In type 2 diabetes mellitus, the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or your cells are unable to efficiently utilize insulin. In gestational diabetes which develops in pregnant women, the pancreas does not produce adequate insulin or the cells develop insulin resistance.

It’s important to know the early warning signs of diabetes, so you can consult your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Consult your doctor about how to lower your risk for diabetes and optimal diabetes management.
