DESONIDE

Desonide is a drug that is also known as a synthetic corticosteroid. It is available as a cream, an ointment or a lotion. In the skin, it induces phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins (lipocortins) and inhibits the release of arachidonic acid, and thus hinders the creation and release, as well as the activity of inflammatory mediators.

Desonide is used in the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Viral skin infections (example vaccinia, herpes simplex)
  • Tuberculosis
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Ulcerated lesions

Desonide may have the following side effects:

  • Pruritus
  • Pain
  • Folliculitis
  • Rash
  • Peripheral oedema
  • Pustular rash
  • Sweating
  • Erythema
  • Hypertrichosis
  • Acneiform eruptions
  • Hypopigmentation
  • Allergic contact dermatitis
  • Skin maceration/atrophy
  • Secondary infection
  • Adrenal suppression
  • Facial swelling
  • Growth retardation in children

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Children
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Desonide may interact with the following medicines:

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Stinging
  • Burning
  • Irritation
  • Peeling
  • Dryness
  • Redness of the skin
  • Itching
