Dental surgery is a medical procedure that consists of artificially altering dentition. It is a surgery of the jawbones, teeth, and gums. Dental surgery is needed to help you with your mouth-related problems. Surgical procedures may be very intimidating to some.

  • Tooth Extraction– It is a well-known type of dental surgery that is often required to remove a damaged tooth. There are many reasons why tooth extractions are needed.   • Prosthodontics – It is a branch of dentistry that involves thetreatment, diagnosis, maintenance of oral function, appearance, and other conditions associated with tooth loss or problems with maxillofacial tissues using a biocompatible substitute. It is a procedure that helps in reshaping the teeth to create crowns, veneers, and dental implants for artificial teeth.
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery– It is a form of oral surgery. Surgeons of oral and maxillofacial surgery treat various disorders that affect the facial bones and others tissues, including the oral cavity and jaws. This surgery is more focused on the restoration of the face, facial trauma, head, neck, jaws, and mouth.

DIAGNOSIS

Before undergoing dental surgery, your dentist will refer you to a specialist. The doctor may need to perform x-rays on your mouth and head to determine your primary needs. It is important to tell all your medications and medical history. Being informed is needed to understand your procedure.

 

TREATMENT

Different medications may be prescribe by your dentist. Some of these can prevent infections, control pain, lessen anxiety, and treat oral diseases. Your doctor may give you anti-inflammatory agents, topical analgesics, and other medicines to treat your conditions.

On the day of your surgery, you should not eat or drink for eight hours before surgery begins.  A patient will stay in the hospital depending on what kind of surgery will be performed. Any types of surgery require a recovery period. Your food intake should be limited, or you should take nutritious foods. You can also use over-the-counter pain medications for surgical extraction. Jaw surgery needs a potent pain killer.

It is essential to follow all the instructions from your surgeon to ensure that there will be complete recovery. You should contact your dentist for any concerns, especially if it is essential. Don’t ignore any symptoms you may feel so that you will not develop infections or complications.
