DELUSION

A delusion is a false belief that contradicts what is true and what is reality. The quality of a delusion depends on how much the individual trusts it. Usually, delusions are a result of a mental disorder but not all delusions can qualify for a mental health disorder diagnosis.

Delusions have four main qualities:

  • The person having the conviction trusts it to be valid, even when the current standard and other individuals know it to be false.
  • The individual with the delusion won’t listen to other perspectives about the conviction and won’t consider change when evidence refutes the delusion
  • The delusion is inconceivable or doubtful.
  • The delusion impacts the individual’s everyday life.

Numerous types of mental health problems can create delusions. These delusions that are a result of mental health problems include the following:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Dementia
  • Delirium
  • Major depressive disorder with psychotic features

Symptoms of delusion include the following:

  • Antagonistic behavior
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Other behaviors that are consistent with delusions
  • Poor occupational functioning
  • Irrationality
  • Thoughts of persecution
  • Thoughts that somebody is in love with them
  • Thoughts that they are superhuman or with powers
  • Thoughts of jealousy
  • Belief that one’s body has a deformity
  • Social difficulties
  • Romantic problems
  • Irritability

DIAGNOSIS

The physician will obtain a medical history and do a physical exam to rule out other medical problems.

Tests will be requested, which may include the following:

  • Thyroid function tests
  • Screening for alcohol and drugs

A psychological evaluation may also be done wherein a mental health professional asks about symptoms, feelings and thoughts.

TREATMENT

Usually a team approach is needed to make sure that medical, psychiatric and social needs are met.

Psychotherapy is usually the most effective form of treatment for delusional disorders.

The patient may also be given medicines based his or her condition.

Self-help may be suggested but some experts do not recommend this due to certain risks.
