Description: Dasatinib is tyrosine kinase inhibitor used to treat chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in adults who have resistance or intolerance to previous therapy, including imatinib.

Dasatinib is used to treat CLL and AML by stopping or slowing the growth of cancer cells.

How to use dasatinib
Take by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. This medication should be swallowed whole. Do not break, cut, or crush the tablets. Avoid taking antacids with it. (e.g., aluminum/magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate).

Strictly follow the prescribed dosage.  Dont take more or less for best treatment outcome. Also avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while using this medication unless your doctor or pharmacist says you may do so safely.

Pregnant women should not handel this drug as it may cause adverse effects on the unborn fetus.

Side effects may range from mild to serious complications.  Consult your doctor immediately when you feel the following symptoms: Upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, tiredness, muscle pain, body aches, and loss of appetite, dry cough, swelling (especially of lower legs/the area around eyes), sudden/unexplained weight gain, increasing trouble breathing (shortness of breath, dyspnea), black/bloody stools, dark urine, stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, yellowing eyes/skin, severe dizziness, fainting, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, chest pain, confusion, weakness on one side of the body, very serious blood disorders (low number of blood cells such as red cells, white cells, and platelets), bruise or bleed more easily, signs of infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat), easy bruising/bleeding, unusual tiredness.

Get medical emergency help immediately when you experience symptoms of overdose (seizures, bluish skin (cyanosis), sudden vision changes, sudden loss of vision).

Inform your doctor of your allergies (food or drugs), medical conditions and  medical history before taking this drug, especially of: bleeding problems, heart problems (e.g., irregular heartbeat), liver problems, a certain lung problem (pulmonary arterial hypertension).

Dasatinib may cause fast/irregular heartbeat and other symptoms (such as severe dizziness, fainting) that need medical attention right away.  This condition may also be caused by low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood when using diuretic pills.  Older people are more sensitive to this side effect.

Avoid getting cut, or bruised, and consult your doctor before having immunizations/vaccinations when taking this drug.

For pregnant and nursing (breastfeeding) women, consult your doctor before using this medication as this may cause harm to the baby.

Do not use this drugs with other drugs such as: St John’s wort, “blood thinners” (e.g., warfarin, aspirin), H2 blockers (e.g., cimetidine, famotidine, ranitidine), proton pump inhibitors (e.g., lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole), drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove dasatinib from your body (such as azole antifungals including itraconazole/ketoconazole, corticosteroids including dexamethasone, HIV protease inhibitors including ritonavir/saquinavir, macrolide antibiotics including erythromycin, rifamycins including rifampin/rifabutin, certain anti-seizure medicines including carbamazepine/phenytoin, telithromycin).

This drug can slow down the removal of other drugs from your body such as cyclosporine, ergotamine, fentanyl, simvastatin, and tacrolimus, among others.

Consult your doctor about the risks and benefits as well as adjustments of dosages for your maintenance drugs.

Overdose
Get medical emergency help immediately when you experience symptoms of overdose (seizures, bluish skin (cyanosis), sudden vision changes, sudden loss of vision).

Missed Dose
Take it as soon as you remember.  Do not increase the dose to catch up. If it is less than 6 hours until the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.

Storage
Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Open only one bottle at a time, and once the bottle is opened, the medication must be thrown away after 4 months. Keep all medications away from children and pets. Discard the drug properly- do not throw in toilet or sink.
