Description: Daptomycin is an antibacterial causing bacterial cell death by binding to bacterial membranes and disrupting the membrane potential; thus inhibiting the synthesis of protein, DNA and RNA.

This medication is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.  But should not be used to treat pneumonia.

It is not recommended for use in children younger than 12 months due to possible risk of serious side effects.

How to use daptomycin intravenous
This medication is given by injection into a vein as directed by your doctor.

Follow the prescribed dosage and intervals for best treatment outcome.

Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve in one week (such as having a new or worsening fever).

Side effects may range from mild to serious complications.  Consult your doctor immediately when you feel the following symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or pain/redness/swelling at the injection site, muscle pain/cramps/weakness, numbness or tingling of hands or feet, unusual tiredness or weakness, change in amount of urine, chest pain, swelling, shakiness, sweating, increased thirst, blurred vision, unusual bleeding or bruising, irregular heartbeat, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, cough, difficult/painful breathing, new/unexplained fever, white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.

This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea) due to a type of resistant bacteria. Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection).

Seek emergency medical help if you expereince allergies (rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing) or the symptoms mentioned above while taking this drug.

Inform your doctor of your allergies (food or drugs), medical conditions and  medical history before taking this drug, especially of: kidney disease or kidney dialysis, muscle problems (e.g., myopathy).

Do not perform activities that require alertness such as driving and using machinery because thid drug can make you dizzy.  Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects.

For pregnant and nursing (breastfeeding) women, consult your doctor before using this medication.

Before using this drug, tell your doctor of the current medications, products (herbal/nonprescription) that you are taking especially of: aminoglycosides (e.g., tobramycin), “blood thinners” (e.g., warfarin), “statin” drugs for cholesterol (e.g., simvastatin, lovastatin), live bacterial vaccines.

It may also interefere with birth control pills. Consult your doctor.

Overdose
Get medical emergency help immediately when you experience symptoms of overdose.

Missed Dose
It is important to receive your scheduled dose for best treatment outcome. Contact your doctor once you remember that you have missed a dose.

Storage
Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets. Discard the drug properly- do not throw in toilet or sink.
