What are colon and rectal cancers?
Colon cancer is a cancer that begins in the colon while rectal cancer begins in the rectum. Cancers affecting either of these organs also may be called colorectal cancer. It is developed when cells in the said organs become abnormal and form more cells in uncontrollably manner.
The colon and rectum plays a part in removing nutrients from food and storing waste until it totally release out of the body. Together, they form the long , muscular tube called the large intestine. The colon is the longest part of the large intestine while rectum is the last several inches of the large intestine closest to the anus
Why should I be concerned about colon and rectal cancer?
The third most common non-skin cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death among men and women is colorectal cancer. It is often called a “silent” disease and found commonly in people over the age of 50. Since colorectal cancer doesn’t show symptoms, it is hard to cure. However, it can be prevented if abnormal cells are found and removed early. Regular screening will help your doctor find cancer cells early and remove it.
