CLARITHROMYCIN

Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that binds specifically to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, preventing the activation of amino acid transport, hence inhibiting intracellular protein production.

Do not use Clarithromycin in people with the following conditions:

  • Severe renal impairment (CrCl 30 mL/min)

  • QT prolongation history
  • Hypokalemia
  • Previous clarithromycin usage that has been linked to hepatic impairment and cholestatic jaundice
  • Clarithromycin or any macrolide antibiotic hypersensitivity

Clarithromycin may have the following side effects:

  • Vasodilation (IV)
  • Hyperhidrosis
  • Rash
  • Insomia
  • Headache
  • Increased BUN
  • Prolonged prothrombin time
  • Candidiasis
  • Injection site reactions 
  • Dyspepsia
  • Dysgeusia
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Exacerbation or new onset of myasthenia gravis
  • Hepatic dysfunction

Potentially Fatal: 

  • IgA vasculitis or Henoch-Schonlein purpura
  • Drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Arrhythmias
  • QT prolongation
  • C. Difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD)
  • Pseudomembranous colitis 
  • Hepatic failure
