CHLORPHENIRAM-DM-ACETAMINOPHEN

Chlorpheniram-DM-Acetaminophen is combined to treat symptoms caused by the common cold, flu, allergies or other breathing illnesses such as rhinitis and bronchitis. Chlorpheniram is an antihistamine and reduces the symptoms caused by the natural chemicals histamine in the body. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that reduces the urge to cough by affecting certain part of the brain. Acetaminophen (APAP) is a non-aspirin pain reliever and fever reducer.

This combination medication is used to temporarily treat symptoms of common cold, flu, allergies and other breathing problems. This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

  • Use as prescribed. Too much of Acetaminophen intake may result to severe liver damage.
  • Do not use with other drugs containing the same ingredients.
  • Limit alcohol beverages.

Common side effects of this drug may include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred Vision
  • Upset Stomach
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth, nose or throat

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Unlikely or rare but serious side effects include:

  • Mental or Mood Changes (such as Confusion, Hallucinations)
  • Trouble Urinating
  • Fast/Irregular Heartbeat
  • Seizure
  • Serious Allergic Reaction

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these.

Precautions

Before taking this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to any of its ingredients; or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are planning to undergo a surgery.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Your medical condition such as:
    • breathing problems (such as asthma, emphysema)
    • diabetes
    • glaucoma
    • heart problems
    • high blood pressure
    • kidney problems
    • liver disease
    • seizures
    • stomach or intestinal problems (such as blockage, constipation, ulcers)
    • overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
    • urination problems (such as trouble urinating due to enlarged prostate, urinary retention)

This drug may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. Avoid activities requiring alertness or clear vision such as driving until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit the use of alcohol and certain other medications that cause drowsiness.

Older adults and children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially dizziness, drowsiness, mental or mood changes, constipation, fast heartbeat, trouble urinating, or blood pressure changes.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Alcohol
  • MAO inhibitors such as Isocarboxazid, Methylene Blue, Moclobemide, Phenelzine, Procarbazine, Rasagiline, Selegiline, Or Tranylcypromine.
  • Antihistamines applied to the skin such as Diphenhydramine Cream, Ointment, Spray, Ketoconazole.
  • Opioid pain or cough relievers such as Codeine, Hydrocodone.
  • Drugs for sleep or anxiety such as Alprazolam, Lorazepam, Zolpidem.
  • Muscle relaxants such as Carisoprodol, Cyclobenzaprine.
  • Other Antihistamines such as Cetirizine, Diphenhydramine.

This medication may interfere with certain laboratory tests (including urine 5-HIAA), possibly causing false test results. Make sure laboratory personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug.

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Sweating
  • Stomach or Abdominal Pain
  • Extreme Tiredness
  • Agitation
  • Confusion
  • Flushing
  • Hallucinations
  • Yellowing Eyes or Skin
  • Dark Urine
  • Seizures

In children, excitement may occur first before loss of coordination, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, seizures.
