Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic that is used to treat various infections. It represses the creation of bacterial protein by binding to the 50s subunit of the bacterial ribosome. This further prevents peptide bond creation by peptidyl transferase. It has both bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities against the bacteria H. influenzae, N. meningitis, and S. pneumoniae. Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic.
