CEPHALEXIN

Cephalexin belongs to a class of drugs called cephalosporins (antibiotics). It works by interfering with the formation of the bacteria’s cell walls. This ruptures the walls and kills the bacteria.

This medication is used to treat infections caused by bacteria. The infection includes upper respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections.

Cephalexin may also be used for purposes determine by your doctor.

Do not use this medicine if you are/have:

  • Allergic to Cephalexin or to similar antibiotics, such as Ceftin, Cefzil, Omnicef, and others.
  • Allergic to any drugs, especially Penicillins or other antibiotics
  • Certain medical condition such as kidney or liver disease, a stomach or intestinal disorder such as Colitis, Diabetes, or if you are malnourished.

Side effects of this drug may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Upset Stomach

Tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly if any of these effects persist or worsen.

Rare symptoms of the side effect of this drug may include:

  • White Patches in Your Mouth
  • Change in Vaginal Discharge
  • Abdominal or Stomach Pain/Cramping
  • Blood/Mucus in Your Stool
  • Allergic Reaction, Including: Rash, Itching/Swelling (Especially of the Face/Tongue/Throat), Severe Dizziness, Trouble Breathing

Precautions

Before taking Cephalexin, take note of the following:

  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or to Penicillins or other Cephalosporins (such as cefpodoxime) or if you have any other allergies.
  • Notify your doctor about your medical history, especially of kidney disease, stomach/intestinal disease (such as Colitis).
  • Caution is advised if you have diabetes because the liquid form of this product may contain sugar. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about using this product safely.
  • Do not have any immunizations/vaccinations while using this medication unless your doctor tells you to. This is because Cephalexin may cause live bacterial vaccines (such as Typhoid vaccine) to not work as well.

 

Interactions

Cephalexin oral capsule can interact with other medications, vitamins, or herbs you may be taking. Drug interactions can be harmful or prevent the drug from working well.

To help avoid interactions, your doctor should manage all of your medications carefully.

Interactions that increase your risk of side effects

  • Probenecid

-Taking Cephalexin with certain medications like Probenecid raises your risk of side effects from Cephalexin because the amount of Cephalexin in your body is increased.

  • Metformin

– Taking Metformin and Cephalexin together may cause kidney problems.

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call emergency hotline.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Severe/Persistent Vomiting
  • Blood in the Urine
  • Seizures
