CARBIMAZOLE

Carbimazole is a drug that is metabolized to thiamazole in order for it to work as an antithyroid drug. It inhibits the production of thyroid hormones by blocking the organification of iodide and the coupling of iodothyronine residues.

Uses

Carbimazole is used in the following conditions:

As adjunct to radio-iodine therapy
Hyperthyroidism
Preparation for thyroidectomy
Blocking-replacement

Warnings

Do not give Carbimazole to patients with the following medical conditions:

Serious, pre-existing blood problems
Severe liver impairment

Carbimazole may have the following side effects:

Nausea
Headache
Arthralgia
Fever
Jaundice
Malaise
Mild gastric distress
Skin rashes
Pruritus
Taste disturbance
Bone marrow depression including neutropenia
Eosinophilia
Leucopenia
Rarely, pancytopenia/aplastic anemia and isolated thrombocytopenia
Hemolytic anemia
Agranulocytosis
