Bivalirudin

Carbetocin is an analogue of oxytocin with a longer duration of effects. It selectively binds to oxytocin receptors inside the muscles of the uterus, stimulating rhythmic uterine contractions and growing both the frequency of existing contractions and uterine tone. Additionally, it complements uterine involution early after giving birth.

Carbetocin is used in the prophylaxis of uterine atony and excessive bleeding after caesarean section.

Carbetocin should not be given to people with the following conditions:

  • Pre-eclampsia/eclampsia
  • Severe heart disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Pregnancy

Carbetocin may give rise to the following side effects:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Tremor
  • Anxiety
  • Tachycardia
  • Hypotension
  • Flushing
  • Sweating
  • Dyspnea
  • Pruritus
  • Chest and back pain
  • Chills
  • Feeling of warmth
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Metallic taste
  • Anemia

Precautions

Special precautions should be observed in people with the following conditions:

  • Asthma
  • Migraine
  • Heart disease
  • Hyponatremia
  • Lactation

 

Interactions

Carbetocin may interact with the following medicines:

  • Prostaglandins
  • Inhalational anesthetics (example halothane)
  • Vasoconstrictors in conjunction with caudal-block anesthesia
  • Ergot alkaloids (example methylergometrine)

Symptoms of Carbetocin overdose include the following:

  • Uterine hyperactivity and rupture
  • Postpartum hemorrhage
  • Hyponatremia
  • Water intoxication
