CAPSAICIN

Capsaicin is the compound found in chilli peppers. It is responsible for the hot feeling when you taste chilli peppers.

Medically it is used as main ingredient in pain relief creams and patches. It is available as lotion, cream, ointment, stick, gel or film. It can be purchased without a prescription over the counter.

Capsaicin is used in treating the following:

  • Headaches
  • Postherpetic neuralgia or other long-term conditions like diabetic neuropathy
  • Pain

Do not give this drug to people with the following conditions:

  • Burn
  • Allergies to cayenne pepper and capsicum

Capsaicin may have the following side effects:

  • Warmth
  • Stinging
  • Burning on the application site
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Watery eyes
  • Throat irritation
  • Blistering or swelling at the application site
  • Pain at the application site

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Allergy to it and to hot peppers
  • To hot peppers (from the Capsicum family
  • Injured or irritated skin in the affected area
  • Pregnancy
  • Breast-eeding

 

Interactions

Capsaicin may interact with the following medicines:

  • Class I antiarrhythmic drugs such as mexiletine and quinidine

Zucapsaicin
