BURPING - WatsonsHealth

BURPING

Burping, or belching, is the body’s way for expelling excess air from the upper abdomen. Most burping is caused by excess air that you have swallowed. This air frequently never reaches the stomach yet gathers in the esophagus.

Signs or symptoms of gas in the abdomen include:

  • Burping
  • Passing out gas
  • Pain, cramps in the abdomen
  • Abdominal fullness
  • Abdominal distension

DIAGNOSIS

Your doctor will diagnose your condition by obtaining your medical history and eating habits while also doing a physical exam. Based on the sounds of your abdomen and other physical exam findings, your doctor may order additional diagnostic tests.

TREATMENT

If your burping is caused by a medical issue, treating the basic condition may offer relief. Burping may also be treated with dietary measures, lifestyle changes and alterations or over-the-counter medicines. Your doctor may advise you to diminish intake of high fiber foods, dairy, sugar substitutes, fried and fatty foods, and carbonated drinks.

Your doctor may give the following treatments:

  • Alpha-galactosidase
  • Lactase supplements
  • Simethicone
