BROMPHENIRAMIN-PHENYLEPHRIN-DM

Brompheniramin and Phenyllephrin-DM is a drug combination that treats the symptoms caused by the common cold, flu, allergies, hay fever or other breathing illnesses like sinusitis and bronchitis.

Brompheniramin is an antihistamine. It works by reducing the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body that causes symptoms such as watery eyes; itchy eyes, nose, throat; runny nose and sneezing. Phenyllephrin is a decongestant that helps in relieving stuffy nose symptoms by shrinking the blood vessels in the nasal passages.

This combination medication is used to treat symptoms of the common cold or seasonal allergies such as runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes. This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Do not take this drug:

  • If you are taking sedatives or tranquilizers because it may increase the drowsiness effect. Consult with your doctor first if taking this drug is really necessary.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Excessively or beyond the doctor’s prescription.
  • If you are now taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or for 2 weeks after stopping the MAOI drug. These are certain drugs for depression, psychiatric, or emotional conditions, or Parkinson’s disease. Ask your doctor to know if you are taking drugs that contains MAOI.

Common side effects of this drug may include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Blurred Vision
  • Upset Stomach
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Dry Mouth, Nose, Throat

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Serious side effects, although unlikely to happen, may occur, including:

  • Mental or Mood Changes (e.g., Confusion, Hallucinations)
  • Ringing in the Ears
  • Shaking (Tremors)
  • Trouble Urinating
  • Weakness
  • Allergic Reactions such as Rashes, Itching and Swelling.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience the following symptoms.

Rare side effects of this drug are:

  • Easy Bruising or Bleeding
  • Fast , Slow or Irregular Heartbeat
  • Seizure

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.
  • Your medical history, especially of:
    • Breathing Problems (e.g., Asthma, Emphysema)
    • Diabetes
    • A Certain Eye Problem (Glaucoma)
    • Heart Problems
    • High Blood Pressure
    • Kidney Problems
    • Liver Disease
    • Seizures
    • Stomach or Intestinal Problems (e.g., Ulcers, Blockage)
    • Overactive Thyroid (Hyperthyroidism)
    • Urination Problems

This drug may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. Avoid activities requiring alertness or clear vision such as driving until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit the use of alcohol and certain other medications that cause drowsiness.

This medicine may contain Aspartame. Consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding the safe use of this medicine if you have phenylketonuria (PKU) or any other condition that requires you to restrict your intake of Aspartame (or phenylalanine).

Children may be more sensitive to the effects of antihistamines. In young children, this medication may cause agitation/excitement instead of drowsiness.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effect of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • MAO inhibitors like Isocarboxazid, Methylene Blue, Moclobemide, Phenelzine, Procarbazine, Rasagiline, Selegiline, or Tranylcypromine. These medications may cause serious interaction.
  • Antihistamines applied to the skin (such as Diphenhydramine Cream, Ointment, Spray)
  • Antispasmodics (e.g., Atropine, Belladonna Alkaloids)
  • Beta Blockers (e.g., Metoprolol, Atenolol)
  • Drugs for Parkinson’s Disease (e.g., Anticholinergics such as Benztropine, Trihexyphenidyl)
  • Guanethidine
  • Certain Inhaled Anesthetics (e.g., Halothane)
  • Methyldopa
  • Reserpine
  • Scopolamine
  • Tricyclic Antidepressants (e.g., Amitriptyline, Desipramine)

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Agitation
  • Confusion
  • Flushing
  • Hallucinations
  • Large Pupils
  • Muscle Twitching
  • Seizures

In children, excitement may occur first before loss of coordination, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, seizures.
