BRAIN TUMORS IN ADULTS

BRAIN TUMORS IN ADULTS

Brain tumors in adult tumor manifest as a mass of abnormal cells in the brain.

A wide variety of brain tumors exist. Some brain tumors are noncancerous or benign, and some tumors are cancer-causing or malignant. Brain tumors can form in your brain as primary brain tumors or can start in various parts of your body and spread to your brain as metastatic brain tumors.

TYPES

The types of adult brain tumors are the following:

  • Gliomas: astrocytomas, glioblastomas, oligodendroglial tumors or mixed gliomas.
  • Meningiomas
  • Schwannomas
  • Ependymomas
  • Craniopharyngiomas
  • Pituitary tumors
  • Primary central nervous system lymphoma
  • Pineal gland tumors
  • Primary germ cell tumors of the brain

SYMPTOMS

Some brain tumors don’t cause symptoms until they are bigger. Various tumors have symptoms that gradually develop.

Symptoms depend upon the tumor’s size, area, how far it has spread, and whether there is brain swelling. The most generally perceived symptoms are:

  • Changes in the person’s cognitive function
  • Headache
  • Seizures
  • Paralysis

DIAGNOSIS

These tests may assess a possible brain tumor and find its area:

  • CT scan of the head
  • EEG (to check the electrical activity of the brain)

TREATMENT

Treatment can include surgery, radiation treatment, and chemotherapy. Brain tumors are best treated by a team composed of a:

  • Neuro-oncologist
  • Neurosurgeon
  • Medical oncologist
  • Radiation oncologist

Tumors can be hard to clear absolutely by surgery alone. This is because the tumor may spread to the other brain tissues surrounding it. If the tumor can’t be removed, surgery can help lessen intracranial pressure and relieve symptoms.
