DIAGNOSIS
Tests and techniques used to diagnose intestinal obstruction include:
- Physical exam
- X-rays
- Computerizeedtomography (CT)
- Ultrasound
- Air or barium swallow/enema
TREATMENT
Hospitalization
Once you are admitted, the doctor will initially give you treatment. Medications may be given through an injection (IV). A nasogastric tube may be placed in your nose to your stomach.
Treatment for intussusceptions
Barium or air enema is used both as a diagnostic technique and a treatment for children with intussusception. If this works, further treatment is not required.
Treatment for partial obstruction
If you have an obstruction in which some food and fluid can partially pass through, you may not require further treatment after you’ve been stabilized.
Treatment for complete ibstruction
If nothing can pass through the digestive tract, you’ll require surgery to remove the blockage.
Treatment for pseudo-obstruction
If your doctor suspects pseudo-obstruction (paralytic ileus), the doctor may give medicines and other treatments for the condition.
