Blastomycosis is a fungal infection caused by a dimorphic (has two forms) fungus termed Blastomyces dermatitidis. It primarily affects the lungs but it can be spread to other parts of the body such as skin, bones, reproductive and urinary tracts, and tissues covering the brain. Immunocompromised patients, travellers and those who dwell in dense wooded areas are at high risk of this infection.
Common symptoms of this disease may include:
Skin lesions or bone lesions may develop if blastomycosis is spread by the blood or lymphatic system. Some people do not develop symptoms.

To diagnose blastomycosis, the doctor may check the history of the patient. He or she may also perform:
TREATMENT
Antifungal drugs (Itraconazole) are the common treatment for this disease. Patients with more severe disease may be treated with amphotericin B or both. The general treatment usually last for about six to 12 months.
